Birds and things
Another common bird in the area. They produce a raucous 'tobacco box', 'chokk'.
These birds were intially hand reared, before being released into the wild many years ago. With no natural fear of humans, they have become a bit of a pest in the area, stealing food right out of peoples' hands.
These birds don't twitter or chatter, they laugh. Their raucous 'laughter' gives them the title Laughing Kookaburra.
No it's not a bird. This is a swamp wallaby...We get many of these in our yard at night.

So neat! I love cockatoos! I think they're smart :)
Why hunt for food when it's right there!?!
And a Wallaby in your back yard!
NEAT!
Once, when Piper was two she came running upstairs and said "Mom, mom, come quick! There's five geese in our yard." As geese are rare in February, I went downstairs to look. There, out our large picture window stood 5 white tailed deer!
While a deer is common, to see five of them so close is not :)
We get deer in our yard too. They come out mainly at night, so we hear them but rarely see them.
A deer park was established in the area in the late 1800's for the entertainment of the settlers. The deer were then released into the wild after the failure of the park. Unfortunately they outcompeted the native animals for food and in the process destroyed fragile ecosystems.
But I still get excited when I hear them at night.
Great bird photos. I definitely would love to see and hear those kookaburra in the wild.
Happy Holidays.
I wonder if your wallaby is regarded as the white-tailed deer that come into my yard..can be a pest to some people? I love the birds. Living where it snows, I would never see any kind of colorful bird like a cockatoo. The kookaburra looks a little like our kingfisher...
